It’s so weird to me when people are like “no, this is a good change, Kanna is too young for marriage and sex” re: Kanna’s platonic S-supports.

I honestly do not have much investment in Kanna, but the idea that a mutual crush is signing yourself up for marriage and sex is…weird. Even the Japanese S-supports mostly ended in mutual crushes/”I’ll wait for you”, and there were a couple that were even ‘arguably platonic’–Velour, Dia, and Foleo are all more along the lines of a more mild “let’s always be together” declaration, which…is really not exactly platonic in the greater context of Japanese, particularly not with the blushing portraits and everything, but it’s far from age-inappropriate (and they did it without repeating “friend” three times a line, too).

The most objectionable thing in the Japanese supports is that one fan translator chose to render 恋人 as “lover” in Grey/Kanna without considering the more sexual implications of that word in English.

It’s worth noting that the localization deliberately played Kanna as more babyish, too. With Forrest, for example, he used to cry–he no longer does. He’s not commiserating with Kana over a shared despair, he’s showing her a coping technique for something he’s already past, putting him in a more adult/teacher position relative to her. Kana’s toddlerish exclamations like “rawr means I love you in dragon” are also localization originals.

So the majority of what people use to support “Kanna is too young for romance” is…what was added in the localization. Well, yeah, of course Kana is too young for anything because Kana was rewritten to be younger.

Also, even the localized game doesn’t actually play male Kanna’s supports as “too young for romance”. He’s experiencing these feelings naturally, which means he’s obviously not too young for them. Not having your feelings reciprocated is not the same as too young to experience them at all. They already exist. Of course he’s too young for marriage and children or whatever, but that’s hardly a package deal with a young mutual crush. Everyone’s just patting themselves on the back for ignoring the fact that he has feelings. Not giving your kid the talk doesn’t actually do anything to slow down their maturity, you know? It just leaves them without support.

Actually, it’s kind of interesting that male Kana’s S-ranks are played to rejection and female Kana’s S-ranks simply never bring it up at all and shriek BEST FRIENDS repeatedly. It reflects the subtly disturbing belief implied by being able to give male Kana a towel (but not female) that “boys just mature faster and don’t get bothered by that sort of thing”.

muhplastic:

I like how the people who cry “it doesn’t affect the gameplay!” or “how does this affect the gameplay?” when the discussion of cut/altered content arise are always the first to find something that doesn’t affect the gameplay and drop a game because of it because they’ve yet to realize that it’s not the 1980s anymore and games are more than just gameplay now and people can dislike and not play a game for a multitude of reasons. Not saying their wrong for the reasons they dislike a game but I am condemning their hypocrisy.

Dark Souls II is a great example of a game that has problems unrelated to gameplay that cause people to not want to play it (plus a lot of gameplay issues) and you’ll even hear Dark Souls fans complain about said problems such as the world making no sense, fan fictiony story elements, the intro cinematic obviously being a man when previous games kept the player character ambiguous as to not ruin people’s immersion, and so on. All things that don’t affect the gameplay but some people still dislike Dark Souls II for it and that’s fine.

— Anonymous: What do you think Leo finds attractive in Camilla? I don't think it's looks alone, mainly because Leo never struck me as the kind of guy who'll base his attraction on something so basic. Have any thoughts?

ammie-plays-fe14:

I’ve been asked this before, and my answer remains the same: It’s complicated, and if I could explain it well, I’d have already written the Leon backstory fic.

I always thought Leon’s crush was because she was the only positive female relationship he’s had if you take out femui due to the insert. That added in with them not being completely related and the most likely staggered interactions they could have during his adolesence, he doesn’t have the necessary closeness to develop that mentality that says “no this is your sister!” This is all subjective though.

damoselcastel: In the style of your Elfie vs Effie post, what would the in-a-nutshell Niles vs Zero be?

agoddamn:

HOOO boy. Well, the nutshell version of Niles vs Zero is “self-absorbed slutty bisexual” vs “sad, bitter man lashing out”.

The longer version…jesus, you had to ask for the single most butchered character in the game, huh? You’re responsible for the sour mood this shitty dialog gets me in, pal :V

Check this post for an in-depth line-by-line comparison of some lines. My post isn’t quite a comprehensive one; I haven’t gone through every individual line or most My Castle chatter.

  • General voice issues: Zero speaks rather harshly; Niles is lighter and more camp. Zero never talks about himself in such a light-hearted manner as “just another Tuesday for Lil Niles”.
  • Nohr 8 recruitment: Zero talks in innuendo about being there to please Kamui; Niles says he’s there as a servant. Corrin, in spite of the fact that they are standing next to a maid/butler, becomes offended by the idea of a servant and says they want to be equals.
  • Mamui support: Zero attempts to bite him; Niles meows randomly.
  • Zero makes implications that he was sexually abused. Removed.
  • Zero’s speaking about the love he feels for male Kamui was removed.
  • Harold support: Zero’s comments to him are more sexually charged, and in the A rank Harold observes that Zero starts talking in innuendo more aggressively when he’s uncomfortable; it’s a defense mechanism. This was removed entirely with Niles and Arthur.
  • Elise support: Zero is purposely giving Elise advice that he expects to blow up in her face because he wants to watch her cry. Niles is treated as completely genuinely kind save for a brief “oh, that’s a shame” comment in the A-rank, which isn’t followed up on.
  • Odin support: Zero submitted weapon names with sexual innuendo; references to the names were removed in English.
  • Mozume support: When she talks about everyone dying, Zero says he enjoys watching her suffer; Niles propositions her for sex.
  • Aqua support: Zero says that he keeps people away with crass talk because he can’t open up to them; Niles says he can’t stand people who lack compassion.
  • Birthday line: Zero is moved that he’s come so far that someone would celebrate the day he was born; Niles says that the world should thank him for being born.
  • Death line: Zero mentions that he has to live for Leon’s sake; removed entirely.
  • Confession line: Zero muses on what love feels like and wonders when he fell for Kamui like this (the implication being that he hasn’t felt love before); Niles says that he hopes Kamui doesn’t know what he’s getting into.
  • Skinship lines: obviously, all removed.
  • Zero makes some very aggressively sexual teases pre-marriage; he also mentions that he lost his eye to some scum of a man.
  • In his full-heart post-marriage line, Zero talks about an agonizing nightmare of his childhood that he experiences, and that he feels better when he wakes to see Kamui beside him. He asks Kamui to hold his hand as he sleeps. The localization removed this in favor of “You’ve taught me to embrace love…and showed me that it can be just as exquisite as pain. Let’s share plenty of both.”
  • In accordance with Zero’s filthy talk being largely a defense mechanism, he talks more plainly and gently with Kamui after marriage. Niles keeps the innuendo, cranks it higher, and is arrogant. This one’s a nice example of the contrast, from that Reddit post:

Zero: “Welcome back. Here… take this. Giving flowers to one’s lover… you understand the meaning of that, don’t you?” (other characters’ flower lines mention how they symbolize love)
Niles: “Ah. You’re back. I got you these flowers. …Go ahead. You can kiss me.“

  • Endings: In the Nohr end, Zero and male Kamui opened an orphanage and lived quietly together. Was removed; Niles and male Corrin have the same ending as Niles and female Corrin (traveled the world and their humanitarian work inspired songs and folktales).

In short, when Zero makes sexual cracks, they come from his own pain. When Niles does, they’re funny.

You may have noticed that the localization actually added more sexual talk from Niles in some places (Mozume, My Room lines); they did this consistently for moments when Zero was actually admitting to weakness or doing something that indicated pain (in his Mozume support, Zero implies that he has never felt the pain of loss because he’s never cared for anyone that much, and snaps at her that he’d rather watch her pain after she makes him admit that) and played the moments much more lightly.

One can draw the conclusion from Zero’s implied sexual abuse and his Harold conversation that his sexual aggression is taking control of something that was used to hurt him and making it a weapon to protect himself; Niles just likes sex.

A bit like Elfie to Effie: Zero is someone to be taken seriously, even sometimes a threat. Niles is sooOOoo thirsty xD
